So, I'm Here… What's The Deal With Avalon?

"So, I’m here. What’s the deal with Avalon?"

Well, it’s pretty small.
But there are a lot of fun places to see and things to explore!

Take an Oceanside walk around the Casino!
There is a museum, but don’t pay for a tour inside the building – you’ll have all of Saturday night to explore the movie palace and the ballroom at the wedding.

See some Nature!
There are fabulous hikes (try the Trans Catalina Trail), jeep tours through the hills, and a gorgeous garden and cafe at the Airport in the Sky.
Look closely!  You might catch a glimpse of a bald eagle or the famous Catalina Bison! But watch out for the feral pigs. They can be nasty.

Dive into the Sea. (literally, or figuratively)!
Of course the ocean is there for you to swim in, but if you’d rather not get your feet wet, enjoy a ride on a Glass Bottom Boat (Maria’s favorite), or a ride on the SS Nautilus – a semi-submerged submarine armed with fish food torpedoes.

Package deals for a variety of activities are sold here:

Take in a View!
The Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Gardens are well worth the 30 minute walk outside town.  (There are also shuttles that can drive you up the hill.)  Built by William Wrigley, Jr. of chewing gum and Chicago Cubs fame, the memorial building offers one of the best views of the ocean on the island.  The garden contains several varieties of plants that can only be found on Catalina. Both are truly stunning.

Play a Round of Golf!
The Catalina Golf Course is the oldest Golf Course on the island and a 10 minute walk outside of Avalon.
The miniature golf course is located in the town of Avalon near the trail to the Nature Conservatory.

Relax!
Welcome to the Descanso Beach Club! Sit on the beach, at an oceanfront table, or rent your own lounge chair or cabana and drink in the scenery! (Or drink in a cocktail from the beach bar!).
You can also swim, kayak (Sean and Maria favorite!), scuba dive, snorkel, or do a zip line across the island! Beware of the kelp forests when kayaking – Sean and Maria have been known to get stuck in them more than once or twice.

Stroll Crescent Avenue (the main street of town which runs parallel to the water) and stop in any of the number of shops and art galleries.  There are five side streets and two plazas to also explore - all of which also have a variety of shops and restaurants. There is no shortage of places to buy souvenirs, clothes, jewelry, and nick nacks so don't blow your wad on the first store you find!

Be sure to check out Three Palms Arcade. Play some skeeball, and go bowling.  If you win enough tickets, please trade them in for an eye patch!  It’s a perfect accessory for every wedding outfit.

Visit Island Toy Store Plus More!  It’s the best (and only) toy shop on the island. It’s also the store where Sean bought Maria’s original toy turtle engagement ring.

CC Ghallagher offers delicious coffee and food, fantastic desserts, wine, sake, and beer tastings, as well as some of Sean and Maria’s favorite home and clothing items in their gift shop.
